Make a wave drum and recycle!

Some of you love the wave drum I have in class. The one that is see-through and has the beads inside. Well, last Monday night I picked up a salad from McDonald’s on my way home. And, as soon as I saw the bowl I knew what I could do with it. The bowl part is black, but the lid is clear. I have added some beads and crazy glued the edges shut. It makes a terrific wave drum. This was a side salad so the drum is small.

Yesterday, I picked up a Mandarin Chicken Salad at Wendy’s to take to the park for Hannah’s field trip. It is a bigger container that is very similar in shape and style. Whooohoo, now I have a bigger one too.

For those of you with children that are still quite young and mouthing things, try putting in Fruit Loops or Rice puff cereal. It will create a different sound, but will not pose a choking hazard if the bowl should be broken or come apart.

Perhaps this is the incentive I need to order salad more often than I order a sandwich! Hmmmmm maybe there is a Kindermusik teacher’s diet plan hatching.

  • I love making wave drums with my Creatures at the Ocean students. We like to add colorful fish and ocean creatures stickers to the colored part of the dish, then put 1/2 cup Grapenuts (or generic version) because it looks like SAND. Each child also gets to choose a small shell to add in for additional fun. We have tried several containers, but some of the supposedly disposable “Gladware” flat containers have a nice tight fit, and stay well when glued.
