Reading anyone???

As we set out on a new semester of Kindermusik, I want to tell you about several opportunities to share reading with your child. I also am very sad that the entire summer has passed us by without getting the adult book club going. I am considering one Tuesday evening a month. If you are interested in book club, please let me know how this works for you. I will have a sign up in the classroom this week.

Okay now for reading with the little ones:

First and foremost – your child is never too young to experience going to the library. Last summer I was priviledged to get an opportunity to do a Kindermusik demo at each of the Athens County Library branches. They are all fantastic, have wonderful staff and terrific childrens’ book sections. All of the libraries have board books for infants. So, take time to go to the library. I try to remember to post suggested reading in the sidebar of this blog if you need some help to get started.

Secondly – I offer Scholastic book club orders in the studio. The first set of newsprint catalogs will be available in class this week. Ordering is purely optional and I don’t want anyone to ever feel pressured to by something else. I do, however, feel strongly that Scholastic offers quality books for a reasonable price. And, you don’t have to do anything except turn the order in during class time and pick it up during class when it comes in. I do the rest.

Thirdly – Another completely optional opportunity for book purchasing has come my way. Shelly Swanson, Rebecca’s mom (ABC class), has recently become an Usborne book consultant. Usborne is a home party company similar to Pampered Chef or Mary Kay, but much more fun because it is books. I am hosting a party to help Shelly out and to try to get a few more books for the studio (no comments please) on September 19. Time is TBA as we haven’t set it yet. The show will be at my house. Please come enjoy some snacks and browse what Shelly has to offer. It isn’t too early to start thinking about Christmas presents.

Finally – Jumpstarts Read for the Record event happens on October 2nd. This is an activity that brings awareness to the need for early reading and to provide books to underprivileged children. I will have more information and a link to a website on this event in this spot and, hopefully, on my new and improved website soon. There are ways you can help. The selected book for this year is Corduroy. I will be reading that story to at least a few of my classes during the week of Read for the Record.

So, go enjoy a good book for yourself. Read a story to the child in your life. And, find a way to share books with others.
