Happy Belly Laugh Day! Did you know that laughing has many health benefits?
Laughter is a powerful antidote to stress, pain, and conflict. Nothing works faster or more dependably to bring your mind and body back into balance than a good laugh. Humor lightens your burdens, inspires hopes, connects you to others, and keeps you grounded, focused, and alert. (See complete article here)
I know I certainly can use a belly laugh today. Many of us in the midwest, east coast and north east have been hit hard with winter weather that has confined us indoors and messed up school schedules, activities and the ability to go about our daily lives. Like I said a few days ago – when life gives you snow, make ice cream!
There are lots of ways to have belly laughs – especially with your children. Many of them are very inexpensive (or free) and do not require many tools or extra “things”.
For your baby – a simple game of peek a boo can elicit smiles and giggles. Listening to a baby giggle can erupt an entire room into laughter. That is why videos such as this are so popular. Babies also enjoy games such as This Little Piggy or Round and Round the Garden that end in a gentle tickle!
For your younger toddler – play the silly face game. See how many different faces you can make at each other or in the mirror. Toddlers also love anything slapstick – fake falling down (be careful), dropping items such as pillows or balls, sticking a blanket down the back of your shirt and looking for it can be hours of entertainment.
For older toddlers, and preschoolers – rhyming games, and silly word play are the hit of the day. Or play dress up with clothes found in the closet – long forgotten. Or declare swimsuit day – even though it is snowing inside. Two great books for this age are Silly Sally and Bark George – they are sure to make children (and adults giggle).
For school aged children try some stacking games with marshmallows or blocks, poetry by Jack Prelutsky or Shel Silverstein (Check out his Runny Babbit book), creating new creatures by cutting body parts out of magazine pictures and gluing them on paper.
And for everyone – don’t forget to sing, listen to music and dance! Kindermusik has downloadable music at play.kindermusik.com. You can sort by style or by theme. Listen to Hey Lolly and then make up your verses. There are listening games and activities as well.
Also brand new is Kindermusik Radio. You can get the details of this App for your iPhone, Ipod Touch, or iPad here.
Finally, don’t forget that the Kindermusik classroom is a guaranteed giggle every week! It is a schedule day for you to get out of the house with your little one to sing, dance, play, smile, and learn with other friends of similar age and developmental stage.
